Art Challenge - Tuesday 16th June

Hi year 5!

As we are all stuck inside quite a lot I thought it would be a good idea to practice our observational sketching using an interesting object from our homes. Here are some examples:

Tips:

* Sketch the outline lightly.
* Focus on light and dark areas for the shading.

Please use safe objects and ask an adults permission to move anything!

Good luck!

Science Challenge - Forces

Hello year 5,

It's Mr Hissey here. I hope you are all well. Over the next few weeks I will be setting some home learning for you to do around the area of FORCES in science.

The first thing I would like you to do, to get you thinking about forces, is watch the following video about pushes and pulls.

Task 1: Using the ideas around pushes and pulls discussed in the video,  sketch and label 5 examples of objects which can have a push or pull force applied to them. Try to label the direction of the force using an arrow and whether it is a pushing or pulling force. Here's an example:

Objects you might choose to sketch could include:
1. A car moving
2. A football being kicked
3. Somebody jumping
4. A bird flying
5. A bullet being fired from a gun.

Remember there will almost always be more than one force acting on the object. For example gravity is always present and pulling objects.
If you want to show me any of your completed sketches, feel free to e-mail them to me at:

Literacy Week Beginning Monday 15th June

Day one:

Read Chapter 7 and answer the questions below

  1. Why do you think Tom used short sentences to explain how to play football such "YOU! Like THIS! But NOT like THIS" and what does it tell you about how Tom was speaking when the words are written in all capitals?
  2. "After less than an minute....." and "By the time..." are examples of what type of sentence opener: Adverbial opener  or   Prepositional opener
  3. Why did brendan-the-bully's expression change from mean to sad?
  4. Find and copy the description of what Mr Irons looks like
  5. 'Handstand Hannah' is an example of what: Alliteration or Rhyming
  6. What does the term 'confiscating' mean? (Pg 67)
  7. What do you think Mrs Kahn meant by "some poeple can't see past the end of thier nose"?

Day Two:

In this lesson you will be trying to write descriptively by using 'ing' words as the opening word of the sentence and an 'ed' word in the middle of the sentence. Below is an example of how this would look in a piece of descriptive writing.

Write 5 sentences about the spooky picture above using 'ing' openers and add an 'ed' verb in the middle. Here are some words you could use in the sentences, but feel free to select some of your own:

ing words to be used at the beginning of the sentence
Creaking
Stretching
Strolling
Creeping
Banging
Shivering

ed words to be used in the middle of the sentence
stopped
spotted
jumped
shuddered
whistled
howled

Here is my example:

Strolling cautiously across the narrow bridge the wind whistled through the gnarled, ancient trees.

Day three:

The words below can be used as both NOUNS and VERBS in sentences. Look at the word change in these two sentences:

I received some change from the shopkeeper after purchasing a can of Coke-Zero.   Here change is a noun, it is a thing.

Quickly, I decided to change because I realised I had tomato ketchup on my shirt.    Here change is a verb, it is something you would do.

Have ago at using all of the words below in a sentence where the word is a noun and then a different sentence where the word is a verb.
